Where is cutters gap
I loved the TV series for the most part, just a couple of episodes were weak to me. It was interesting to learn at previous ChristyFests the process by which the TV writers went about crafting an episode.
When a large cast is present and being paid, writers work more people into each episode than the novel did. Impossible to accomplish in a weekly series, of course! Thanks for always giving me information, Marilyn! I did watch every episode of the tv series, always hoping I would like it better as time moved on. I never get tired of watching it. I always wished some producer would have made a Christy Christmas movie.
I read the book when I was about 8, and many times since then. I watched the show and believe there is a mini movie too? With my grandma I have a quick eye to point out the difference between both—there was much difference between them, unlike most! I enjoyed the novel, and of course as soon as I finished, I wanted to know what was fact, and what was fiction! So I ended up at this site, and I appreciate your taking the time to research the true facts of Ebenezer Mission and the life of Leonora Whitaker Wood v.
Rose was a very gifted writer, and they both needed some cash after losing their savings in the stockmarket crash of ! My grandmother was recruited at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church after graduating from Queens Collage to teach at a mission in the mountains. Her name was Laura Rebecca Watt and I understand she taught two years, I am trying to verify the information about Laura Watt and identify where she served. Thank you for any information you may have.
Laura Rebecca Orland Murdoch Lmurdoch54 carolina. Marilyn Mitchem or Dave Tabler; I am hoping someone well know about a very old book I read in the Library 10 years ago. Please help if you can. It seemed to be biographic. Thanks, Jamie. Thank you to everyone who left a note on this web site. I just finished re-reading Christy for about the 5th time and loved it as much as the first time.
When I was in college and getting my education degree, we were required to read this book as an example of what teachers some times encounter. Since I had already read it once, it was an eye opener for a soon to be teacher. The television series was very interesting and we taped some of them. I appreciate the contrast between the real Christy and the fictional Christy.
It helps know about the actual people. Christy is still a hero of mine. Sloop was one tough cookie, and that community in that day and time were very fortunate to have her and her husband, also Dr. It was like the novel in many ways. However I was disappointed when I learned the contrast between Christys story and Leonora.
In the prefix of the novel Catherine Marshall spoke like she would write the story as true to life as she could; woven with a little fiction. Why would Catharine give such a misconception about her own parents when it was the minister whom she married.
Just wondering, thank you. I am listening to Christy on tape now. He said his sister was so appalled by that story line that she threw her copy up into the air and into the pool when she got to that part. I am reading Christy again. I love the book. I just found this website and while reading some comments, I just wanted to share some things that might help clear up some statements. Guerrant, as the real life counterpart to Dr. Ferrand, was indeed a mountain missionary who had many missions built in Kentucky and is somewhat revered by those in Kentucky.
To say they never wore kilts, that might be, but he witnessed the wearing the tartans. I know this because he had built a missionary in Breathitt County Jackson , Kentucky and the mission still bears his name. My own great-grandparents were Presbyterian because of him. Guerrant was a Confederate soldier who had traveled through the region and after moral conflict about the Confederate side and slavery, he worked hard to get former Yankee soldiers to join him in his missions work.
He was extremely successful in Kentucky. I would see that he must have been in Tennessee as well. I read the story in the late s and found much of it to be reasonably true as per what my grandmother used to say about the people of the Appalachians.
So you've got to see life the way it really is before you can do anything about evil. You cannot vanquish it. I can. But in My world the battle against evil has to be a joint endeavor.
You and Me. I, God, in you, can have the victory every time. His caring and His love were too real for bitterness to grow in me. Mar 21, Christine rated it it was amazing Recommended to Christine by: My 8th grade study hall teacher. I have read this book about once a year for the last five years, and there's something about it that just draws me in each time.
Maybe it's the teaching missionary part that I so easily identify with, I don't know. This book caputres all the excitement of leaving home for the first time and really starting out in the world on one's own. I love the way that Christy blunders through experiences as she discovers her individuality and what truly makes her special. In many ways, I think Christy is my I have read this book about once a year for the last five years, and there's something about it that just draws me in each time.
In many ways, I think Christy is my role model. May 21, Kristen rated it it was amazing. How can anybody not like Christy? Especially when the movie is so great as well? How heroically unselfish she is in the beginning when she thinks it will be easy to teach school in the backwoods of Tennessee.
Yeah right. It sound "fun" but I'm not that nice; which is too bad, because she really did make a difference in the lives of the children, as well as the community. But can't I do that were I live, instead of traveling to some outlandish isolated hick town?
May 30, Carre Gardner rated it really liked it. I love this book. Twenty years ago, it was one of the stories that inspired me to be a missionary. Between that first reading and this one, I'd forgotten most of the details of Christy's life in Cutter Gap, so this time through, I had all the fun of discovering a new book while still feeling like I was revisiting an old friend.

I thought I was getting the original when I downloaded it to the kindle. Anyway, I really really liked this first one. Couldn't put it down! I'll have to continue reading the rest. Thanks for the suggestion, Nat! View all 5 comments. Jun 05, Catie rated it it was amazing. I loved this TV show so Mom suggested I read the novel. I loved it even more. Christy's adventures as a teacher and the lifestyle of the Appalachians were engaging.
I was sad when the show was canceled. Jun 08, Katie rated it really liked it. This is a fun read. Christy, who grew up near the city agrees to teach at a school located in the smokey mountains. She is determined to stay as the local teacher and make a difference. The story continues with this theme and includes a little romance too.

With breathtaking cinematography, top-notch direction and editing, a musical score that suits the film to a T, and a screenplay that captures the very essence of the themes of Catherine Marshall's novel, this "Christy" is a worthwhile addition to any family's video library. My family has watched it again and again, and I am certain yours will love it too. As a fan of both the book and TV series as well as a native Tennessean , I was very excited when I came across a continuation.
I shouldn't have been, because this was nothing but a constant disappointment. Miss Alice had none of the strength of will that her character was defined by, Lauren Lee Smith was completely lacking in the sweetness and charm that made Kellie Martin in the title role, and the rest of the cast either over-acted so much that I actually winced or were simply forgettable.
Even the cast members who returned from the TV series seemed as if they had lost all connection to the characters. In perhaps one of the more offensive changes, all the effort that had gone into making the characters sound convincingly Appalachian was lost, leaving the cast with generic and fake 'southern accents'. In short, this mini-series was terrible, the dialog was atrocious, plot contrived and the acting was painful to witness. Anthony 2 December Yuck and double yuck.
They re-wrote "Christy" to make this lame movie. They made David and the old doctor best friends who fell in love with Christy. They added the flood of the century along with the typhoid epidemic. And, worst of all, they had Lauren Lee Smith lost in a rainstorm, instead of dying from typhoid.
This scene brings about the doctor's confession and conversion to Christianity. Pathetic mess of a movie. The doctor looks too old to be Christy's husband. Don't waste your time with this junk.
If you want to be entertained, this is a movie to see and enjoy. I didn't at first because it wasn't my original CBS series! That is still my favorite, and always will be
