Where is eternal life found
We have many people who have come to the Lord and received the forgiveness of their sins, but they are saved and stuck. They are just waiting for heaven so they can really start living. That is missing the main point of salvation. If there was no afterlife, if there was no heaven or hell, John reveals that Jesus would still have come and died for our sins so we could once again have an intimate relationship with Him and His Father right now, in this present evil world Gal.
This was one of the main differences between the first-century church and our modern church. Those people knew God intimately. They never even put a bumper sticker on a camel. Yet, these believers turned the known world upside down with the truths of the Gospel in just thirty years Acts They impacted their world much more than we are impacting our world today.
They had such a depth of relationship with a Living God that it was contagious. In Rome, Christians knew their God so intimately that they sang His praises as they were burned at the stake. They had much more than a doctrine and a hope. They had a present-tense relationship that allowed them to endure with joy terrible atrocities. There are historical accounts of Romans, when witnessing the joy of these Christians who were being martyred, jumping out of the stands and rushing to them. They knew they would be doomed to the same fate, but they willingly accepted death so they could know God in the same close, intimate, and personal way as these Christians.
Let me ask you this question. How many people would die to have what you have? Is anyone envious of your relationship with the Lord? This is normal Christian living. This is what drove the Apostle Paul Phil. There is so much more I would like to share with you about this.
Ask my Charis Bible College students. This portion of scripture makes that quite clear; for example, in verse 12, some have eternal life and some do not. All have human, physical, natural life, but all do not possess eternal life. They are two quite different kinds of life. See what Jesus said in John ; all those to whom He was speaking had physical, natural, human life, but they lacked spiritual, eternal life.
What then is eternal life? The whole human race will exist eternally, but those who have eternal life will live eternally. In verse 11 we learn that God has already given eternal life and that all may receive it. Those who do, receive it at once! It is not something that begins when we die; it begins here and now. We must wait until we die for some things, but we do not have to wait until then to possess and enjoy this new life.
Indeed, we must begin to enjoy it before we die physically , because if we die without it we shall never have it; we shall just go on existing. He did it historically when He gave His Son, our Lord Jesus, at the incarnation; He does it experimentally when we as individuals reach out to receive it by faith as a free, unmerited gift.
How do we get it? Have you received the Lord Jesus? But God promises to do all this for you through Christ. You believe that promise. You confess your sins and give yourself to God. You will to serve Him. Just as surely as you do this, God will fulfill His word to you. If you believe the promise,—believe that you are forgiven and cleansed,—God supplies the fact; you are made whole, just as Christ gave the paralytic power to walk when the man believed that he was healed.
It is so if you believe it. The eyes of fallen men may be anointed with the eye-salve of spiritual comprehension, and they may see themselves as they really are,—poor, and miserable, and blind, and naked. They may be brought to realize their need of repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. Are we willing to comply with the conditions? Will we obey God and keep His commandments? Will we be doers of the Word and not hearers only?
Whatever men may say or do to make it void does not change its claims or release them from their obligation to obey. He leads the way, calling upon His sheep to follow Him.
Those who hear and obey His voice will follow His example in all things. Becoming acquainted with Him, they will grow daily more and more like Him.
