Why assign ip to vlan

If the ping fails, verify that IP routing is enabled and that the VLAN interfaces status is up with the show ip interface brief command. If the ping test is successful in step 3, but fails to reach the end device on the other VLAN, verify that the default gateway on the connected device is configured correctly.

If you are not able to reach the Internet or corporate network, verify that the default route on the points to the correct IP address on the default router. Also verify that the IP address and subnet mask on the switch are configured correctly. The default is BW Kbit 1 Gigabit , because the route processor internal inband is only 1 Gigabit by design.

The bandwidth parameter on the show interface vlan output is not fixed bandwidth used by SVI as traffic is routed on the switch backplane.

The bandwidth number can be used in order to manipulate routing metrics, calculate interface load statistics, and so forth. Skip to content Skip to search Skip to footer. Available Languages. Updated: April 21, Contents Introduction. Introduction This document provides the configuration and troubleshooting steps applicable to the creation of Layer 3 interfaces. Before you attempt this configuration on a series switch, ensure that you meet these prerequisites: InterVLAN routing on the Catalyst has certain software requirements in order to support interVLAN routing on the switch.

I would definately go with the second option if possible since it's more simple, eliminating pointless VLANs. Now that I think of it, if you create a VLAN and assign it to an interface, it becomes active and an STP instance gets started for it, consuming a little bit of resources of the MLS multi-layer switch. Router on a stick doesn't scale well, especially when high availability is required. Physical interfaces are in trunk mode, vPC used when possible.

The 2 N5Ks are used as default gateway, no physical interface has an ip assigned to it. I guess this way no subinterface is needed, which greatly simplifies management?

Here is a reminder of how to access the lab. Refer to the correct document below for information about logging into the devices that have been assigned to you:. We now want to segment the network to separate network management traffic from end-user traffic staff and students. Running one large flat network across the entire campus simply does not scale as was covered during the presentation. Each of these segments will be a separate subnet.

We need to take a structured approach with this migration. While we have the luxury of working in a lab for this workshop, on a campus network migration from a flat to a routed backbone needs care and planning. We will now create the VLANs described in the previous steps. These IP addresses are also documented in the master IP address plan.

We will not use it here. We do not know if it is the address of a switch, a server, an AP, a computer, a printer, etc. So how you would know that from the small post from the OP wrote is beyond me. I agree it doesn't have to be the gateway and I have already mentioned this. As I already explained, when you look at most large companies but this is Cisco's best practice and is usually applied to most businesses you actually find that gateway addresses will be the last or first assignable address in a range.

While some network admins might assign it that way, keeping track of this would be cumbersome, especially in increasing network sizes. This becomes even more true when HSRP and such technologies are used which take up two address on each layer 3 interface and give out a third address for the gateway. Keeping track of hundreds of such gateways when HSRP is being used becomes very difficult if there isn't a system for assigning addresses.
