Crops often span thousands of acres, and livestock can be unseen, spread out over miles. A man must be accustomed to being alone, working dawn until dusk to keep from going under. So, I folded a hat out of newspaper, similar to the ones we used to make as children, and did a watercolor portrait of myself while standing in front of a mirror. The most challenging part of any self portrait is depicting the hand that is doing the actual work, since it is always in motion.
